Introducing your dog to new steps at their pace

Introducing your dog to new steps at their pace — product illustration

A new set of dog steps is an unfamiliar object and a new route. Allow time for your dog to investigate it. Some dogs take to steps quickly; others need repeated short introductions, and some may need a different access arrangement.

Prepare the space first

Follow the supplied assembly and positioning instructions. Check the steps are stable on a level surface, the approach is clear and the landing is suitable. Do not begin beside a busy doorway or while children or other pets are rushing around.

Start with familiarity

  1. Allow your dog to look at and sniff the equipment without asking them to climb it.
  2. Reward calm investigation in a way that suits their normal training routine.
  3. When they are comfortable approaching, encourage a small amount of progress rather than expecting the whole route.
  4. Stay close enough to supervise, without pulling them up or pushing them from behind.
  5. Finish while the session is still calm, and repeat another time if needed.

Check the return journey

Coming down can feel different from going up. Supervise both directions, check paw placement and watch the transition at the top and bottom. Keep the steps in a consistent position once a suitable arrangement has been established.

When to stop

Stop if your dog slips, freezes, repeatedly jumps around the equipment or shows discomfort. Do not force them to complete the route. Recheck the fit and setup; persistent difficulty needs advice from your vet or a suitably qualified professional.

New reluctance to jump or use stairs can be associated with a health problem rather than a training issue. PDSA explains signs of limping and stiffness and when to contact a vet.

Keep checking the setup

Inspect covers, joins and the supporting surface regularly. Keep the foam dry and follow the care label. Reassess the arrangement if your sofa, flooring or your dog’s mobility changes.

Before choosing equipment, read our sofa measuring guide and compare the available sofa steps.
