Dog steps or a ramp: what should you compare?

Dog steps or a ramp: what should you compare? — product illustration

Steps and ramps offer different routes to a favourite spot. The right choice depends on the landing height, the space available and what your dog can comfortably use. A ramp is not automatically suitable simply because it avoids separate steps.

Compare the route, not just the product name

Steps divide the climb into individual rises and treads. A ramp creates a continuous slope. Both need a stable position and an appropriate transition at the top. Compare the usable surface, rise or slope, stability and available approach space.

Allow enough room

Our Regular sofa steps have a 60 × 40 cm footprint and are 40 cm high. The convertible set measures 64 × 42 × 41 cm in step configuration and 86 × 40 × 31 cm as a ramp. Rearranging it changes the height as well as the floor space.

If the ramp’s top sits well below your cushion, your dog still faces a final upward transition. If it blocks a walkway, there may not be a safe place for it. Use our sofa measuring guide before choosing.

Think about your dog

  • Watch their normal stride and confidence on unfamiliar surfaces.
  • Check whether they can place their paws on the usable width without crowding an edge.
  • Consider both getting up and coming down.
  • Do not use breed or body weight alone to judge suitability.

The convertible design is intended for small dogs. Maximum supported weight has not been confirmed for either foam style. Neither product should be presented as a treatment for a mobility condition.

Introduce it gradually

Let your dog investigate at their own pace, then practise a short route under supervision. Stop if they hesitate, slip or seem uncomfortable. The introduction guide explains how to plan calm practice.

If movement is painful or has changed, ask your vet about the appropriate access arrangement. PDSA’s senior-dog advice discusses adapting activity and mobility support.
