A practical care checklist for dog beds and blankets

Dog bedding materials need different care. A removable cover, a foam insert and a quilted blanket should not automatically go through the same wash cycle. The supplied label and instructions are the starting point.

Before you wash

• Read the instructions for the exact item and component.
• Check whether a cover is removable and how the zip or fastenings open.
• Remove loose hair and surface dirt in a way suitable for the fabric.
• Inspect seams, fastenings and backing for damage.
• Make sure the item fits your machine without forcing it into the drum.

Keep foam and covers separate

Our bolster bed has a removable cover. Remove it for cleaning and follow its care label. Keep the foam dry; do not machine-wash the filled bed. The foam sofa-step covers are also removable, but the foam should be kept dry.

Do not infer a washing temperature or tumble-drying setting from the word “washable”. Those settings need to come from the actual care label for your item.

For the quilted blanket

Follow the blanket’s supplied washing and drying instructions. Clean spills promptly rather than leaving liquid on the fabric until wash day. Inspect the fabric and backing after washing. Our blanket is water resistant, not waterproof, so continue to check the protected surface underneath after accidents.

Dry fully before reassembly

Allow every cleaned component to dry completely using the method permitted by its label. Do not put a damp cover back around foam or fold a damp blanket into storage. Refit covers without forcing zips and check the item lies in its intended shape before your dog uses it.

Build care into the routine

Regularly check for loose threads, damaged seams, exposed filling or worn fastenings. Keep spare bedding available if the usual item needs time to dry. Replace or stop using an item if damage makes it unsuitable.
